This game is the unmistakable descendant of Tabula (Table), a favorite game of the Romans during the final centuries of the empire. Backgammon is also kin to Parchees, the staple game of India. Both must have derived from a pastime of the Summerians that probably was ancient even then.
Although Backgammon is played with dice, it requires a good deal of memorization, more than a little gaming sense, and a higher level of general intellectual attainment than is required in most other path games. The good Backgammon player beats even a talented novice at least nine times out of ten. It is not all luck.
