The Twelve Caesars - Considered one of the greatest historical works ever written, "The Twelve Caesars" by Suetonius Tranquillus is really more of a character study of Rome's first twelve Caesars than a history. Rife with gossip and racy detail, it begins with Julius Caesar, who committed probably the biggest land grab in history when he converted the Roman Republic into a dictatorship, and ends with Domitian. In between are, among others, Caligula, who slept with most of his immediate relatives and made his horse a Senator, and Nero, who murdered his first wife and mother, then burned the city of Rome to the ground. "The Twelve Caesars" has got it all - scandal, love, lust, murder, jealousy, immorality, unbridled ambition, pleasure-seeking, treachery, adultury, gluttony, wars, horrific battles, and public drunkenness.
"Besides the abuse of free-born lads, and the debauch of married women,
[Nero] committed a rape upon Rubria, a Vestal Virgin. ... He gelded the boy Sporus,
and endeavored to transform him into a woman. He even went so far as to
marry him, with all the usual formalities of a marriage settlement, the rose-colored
nuptial veil, and a numerous company at the wedding."
Suetonius Tranquillus
The Twelve Caesars
Suetonius was born just before the death of the Emperor Vespasian in 79 C.E. He was the son of a Roman Legion commander who fought on the side of Otho at a battle which decided the fate of the Roman Empire in favor of Vitellius. Suetonius grew to become secretary to the Emperor Hadrian until his "presumed familiarities" with Sabina, who just happened to be Mrs. Hadrian, led to his ouster. Suetonius put his leisure time to good use and wrote about what he knew, and apparently, he knew a lot.
