PLToggle is a small app that toggles the display orientation back and forth to the rotation of your choice, without the need for the g-sensor.
The default installation includes the settings screen (available from your start menu), and the application itself, which is available via a long-hold of the call button
WVGAFIX3 allows you to change the screen resolution. It is designed mostly for devices with wide screens - 800x480 or 400x240 (Toshiba G900, SE Xperia X1, HTC Touch HD, HTC MAX 4G). So if a game or program doesn't work in wide mode you can try it in normal VGA/QVGA mode and it will probably work

Some alternatives do exist but are not very good or are Compact Framework application (not a very good idea for background application)

GfxBoost - activates "QTV" mode for specific surfaces. This makes for example DirectDraw display smoother and: a bit slower or significantly faster, depending on how you look at it. It also seems to have a small effect on Direct3D/OpenGL.
This is a bit tricky! If you will benchmark it the result will be lower FPS. However, it will actually appear faster
