"Presently I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror.
It was not a groan of pain or of grief - oh, no! - it was the low stifled sound
that arises from the bottom of the soul when overcharged with awe."
The Tell-Tale Heart
Edgar Allan Poe
All Poe's characters deal with obsessions, paranoia and a fear of death. Poe was orphaned young, and soon his brother died and his sister went mad. Following a stint in the army, Poe traveled to Baltimore to the home of his father's sister, Maria Clemm, and there experienced the first happiness he had ever known. He fell in love with his 13-year-old first cousin, Virginia, and married her in 1836. But six short years later, Virginia suffered a cerebral hemorrhage which left her an invalid. Her death five years later sent Poe into a downward spiral of drugs and drink, and he died two years later in 1849.
