MelApp - You have heard about melanoma skin cancers and are concerned about the health of your skin. MelApp can help you learn about melanoma and identify areas of your skin, which may need the attention of your physician. We allow you to take pictures of areas that are of concern to you and assess them with our automatic pattern recognition software. We refer you to health care specialists who can help you.
Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that can spread quickly and produce large malignant tumors in the brain, lung, liver, or other organs. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and it is therefore not surprising that cancer of the skin is the most common of all cancers. Melanoma is the least common but the most deadly skin cancer, accounting for only about 4% of all cases but nearly 80% of skin cancer deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates that currently nearly 70,000 new melanomas are diagnosed in the United States every year. The United States has experienced a dramatic increase in the number of melanoma cases over the past few decades, possibly due to increasing recreational sun exposure. Investigations have shown that the curability of skin cancer is nearly 100%, if it is recognized early enough and treated surgically. Performing regular self-examination could save your life.
Checking a mole or freckle is performed in two easy steps:
(1) Using MelApp, you take a picture of a mole or freckle, enlarging it with the zoom to fit into the green box,
(2) you then provide the mole size and its evolution and tap on "Check risk" to upload your image to our server.
In a matter of seconds, you get back your risk evaluation. Your pictures are collected in an album in which they can be sorted by date, label, or risk. Hence it is possible to take several pictures of the same mole and track evolution over time. You can also learn to self-assess your mole using the ABCDE feature system to evaluate your risk of melanoma.
This application is made available for educational purpose only and has not been evaluated by the FDA. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Please refer to a physician if you have a skin condition that you are concerned about and/or believe requires attention.
