Bullant Remote for Pocket PC - ARM CPU is a small footprint thin-client that presents the GUI of a Java™ application running on a networked server to the user's Pocket PC device. This version of the Bullant Remote is for Pocket PC devices with an ARM or Strong ARM processor and has a US English language UI.
The Bullant Remote for Pocket PC is optimized for use over high-latency, low-bandwidth wireless networks and has been deployed successfully using CDPD, Mobitex, GSM, GPRS, DoPa and PHS wireless networks. Applications for the Remote can be launched via hypertext link or by starting the Bullant Remote and entering the URL of the application directly. The Remote also supports a configurable image cache, and bookmarking of application URLs.
Bullant supports Remote clients for a number of different devices and operating systems including Microsoft® Windows®, Palm OS® and Microsoft® Pocket PC, as well as any device with a Java J2ME™ MIDP compatible VM.
End users of Bullant applications will benefit from:
A Richer Experience - The Bullant Remote presents a native application look-and-feel on the Pocket PC device using the complete set of Pocket PC GUI widgets.
A Faster Experience - Where possible, the Bullant Remote makes use of a long-lived TCP/IP and as a result delivers superior application responsiveness compared to alternative application delivery mechanisms.
Multi-Device Convenience - Bullant supports the most common operating systems and devices. This means that one application can be made available to multiple devices. In this way, a user's work can follow them, no matter where they may be, and what device they may be using.
Responsiveness on Any Network - Since RAP is optimised for low-bandwidth, high-latency wired and wireless networks, Bullant applications and their users will function efficiently anywhere.
Applications for the Bullant are built using Bullant's JRAP Java™ libraries. Developers will welcome the fact that JRAP:
Allows them to Use Java™ Tools - Developers using JRAP can build, deploy and debug their applications using their existing skillsets and favourite development tools.
Speeds Cross Platform Development - With JRAP, applications execute entirely on the server, no matter what device the application's GUI will be presented on.
Guarantees Safety via Remote Symmetry - Remote Symmetry solves issues of how to synchronise and maintain state information between a client and server over high latency networks. JRAP actively prevents users from performing 'unsafe' operations on a Remote GUI, thus eliminating one of the most difficult and time consuming aspects of distributed GUI development.
Provides an Optimised Event Model - JRAP provides an opt-in event model where developers can control exactly what events from the client are required by an application and whether these should be locking or non-locking: an elegant, bandwidth efficient programming model.
Allows Asynchronous GUI Updates - JRAP provides explicit support for the asynchronous update of a GUI from the server via a simple, safe and robust API.
Solves Complicated Protocol Issues - Networking, protocol design and synchronization between the client and server have been eliminated by JRAP lowering the technical barriers to entry and increasing productivity.
Automates Remote Garbage Collection - The Bullant Remote automates the process of garbage collection of GUIs on Remote devices whilst maintaining the model of Remote Symmetry between the client and server.
Managers will appreciate that Bullant can lower the total cost of ownership of networked applications through:
Faster Time-to-Market - Existing Java™ language skills and components can be used to create rich cross-device applications. Since the application always executes on the server, the developer need not worry about partitioning of applications into client-server components. Similarly, RAP frees the developer from designing and implementing custom client-server communication and synchronisation protocols - a difficult task and a common source of subtle and expensive product defects.
Reduced Provisioning Costs - Once a Bullant Remote has been installed on a device, upgrading an existing application or the provision of a new application is a simple matter of a server software upgrade.
Excellent Security - The Bullant Remote is a fully sandboxed thin-client. No application code is ever downloaded to the device, an approach that simplifes the partitioning of security enforcing functions, prevents intellectual property theft and lowers bandwidth requirements. JRAP based server applications cannot execute arbitrary code via a Bullant Remote, nor can they write to the filesystem on the client device without explicit user permission. Thus, Bullant provides a very robust security model that can be easily audited.
Improved Resource Usage - A Bullant Remote actively manages a device's resource usage including often overlooked tasks such as remote garbage collection. As a result, Bullant applications exhibit a stable and consistent resource usage profile over extended periods of time. This means that more can be done on devices with limited CPU, memory and networking capabilities, lowering the barriers to adoption of networked applications.
Lowered Bandwidth Requirements - Bullant's RAP delivers rich applications using up to 80% less bandwidth than competing technologies.
Developers can register and download the JRAP pre-release for free via the Bullant website.
