The Daily Aviation Term database contains a full year`s worth of definitions of official Federal Aviation Administration and National Weather Service terms and phrases that are of interest to pilots. These terms are applicable for both the FAA oral examination and for a flight review. One term is presented on your computer or PDA (personal digital assistant) daily, so you can spread your study time out over the entire year.
Here are a few samples:
DELAY INDEFINITE (REASON IF KNOWN) EXPECT FURTHER: Used by ATC to inform a pilot when an accurate estimate of the delay time and the reason for the delay cannot immediately be determined; e.g., a disabled aircraft on the runway, terminal or center area saturation, weather below landing minimums, etc.
FRONTAL ZONE: A front or zone with a marked increase of density gradient; wed to denote that fronts are not truly a "surface" of discontinuity but rather a "zone" of rapid transition of meteorological elements.
SIDESTEP MANEUVER: A visual maneuver accomplished by a pilot at the completion of an instrument approach to permit a straight-in landing on a parallel runway not more than 1,200 feet to either side of the runway to which the instrument approach was conducted. (Refer to AIM.)
TORCHING: The burning of fuel at the end of an exhaust pipe or stack of a reciprocating aircraft engine, the result of an excessive richness in the fuel air mixture.
PAN-PAN: The international radio-telephony urgency signal. When repeated three times, indicates uncertainty or alert followed by the nature of the urgency.
This file is presented in both the Personal Folder File (.pst) format for Microsoft Outlook and the Date Book Archive (.dba) format for the Palm Desktop program. Once the database is loaded into your PC it will automatically be transferred to your PDA device during the next synchronization operation.
