MetroCard TopUp is a utility calculator that allows you to easily determine the minimum amount to add to your NYC Transit MetroCard that qualifies for the 15% discount and won t leave a significant unusable excess balance on your card.
Given the latest fare structure and funding options on MTA/NYCTA MetroCard machines, it s very difficult to know how much of an amount to add to your MetroCard without leaving a balance that is too small for a ride. While adding more funds will roll this balance forward you still are left with a residual unusable amount. MetroCard TopUp allows you to avoid this. Calculating the correct minimum without the aid of this calculator is further complicated by the limitation that additional amounts need to be rounded to five cents. MetroCard TopUp makes it easy: you just enter the current balance on your card and it displays the amount to add and the new card value rounded to a half cent and how many rides this amount will purchase.
MetroCard TopUp also displays a table that helps you decide if buying an unlimited card makes sense for you. It displays the average number of rides per day that you will need to take to breakeven by buying a various term unlimited card vs. purchasing per-ride cards assuming the 15% per ride discount.
What if card costs change or the per-ride fare is increased? MetroCard allows you to update these costs and will remember your updates going forward. You can also reset these entered values if you need to.
