Pocket DermPACS is a medical photo archiving program for Window Mobile 5 and 6 Professional. It allows clinical photographs to be stored in a structured clinical context and with encryption and other necessary security features. It has extensive annotation functionality, and is distributed with two desktop programs which allow browsing of images stored on the handheld from the desktop, and backup and restoration of handheld data from the desktop.
In the hierarchy, album is the top level, patient the next level, and encounter and map below patient. Images are assigned to encounters and, optionally, to maps. Each encounter is characterized by its time and date, whereas each map is characterized by its site.
Image embedding for applications such as mole mapping. Images can be embedded as subimages within larger overview images.
Security measures including:
Password-based encryption for all textual, image, and audio data
Automatic program termination after a period of inactivity
Logging of all accesses and changes to data
Calculation of cryptographic hash for each image, when it is added to the system. This can be checked later to ensure the image has not been altered.
Extensive image annotation and editing capabilities
Freehand drawing
Addition to the image of the following graphical elements, in up to 7 different colors:
rectangles
arrows
textual labels
Flip image
right to left
top to bottom
Rotate image
clockwise
counterclockwise
Crop image
Modification of image color and brightness, in RGB or HSB color space
Multilevel undo
Addition of images to the system by
import from a memory card
capture with a built-in camera, if the device has one, without leaving Pocket DermPACS
Textual and audio annotation (text notes can be attached to patients, encounters, or images; an audio note can be recorded and attached to an image)
Sophisticated image viewer which can display images of any size at any resolution (if the device has enough memory), with pan and zoom
Side-by-side image display, with pan and zoom of each image
Display of EXIF metadata
Support for
all Pocket PC form factors
VGA screens. These in fact provide the optimal experience with Pocket DermPACS.
Portrait and landscape orientations
The accompanying desktop programs allow for:
Automatic backup and restoration of handheld data
Viewing of images on the desktop screen, at full screen resolution
Advanced mosaic image display (Pocket DermPACS can only display two images at once, but the Desktop Browser can create mosaics with up to 16 images)
Image printing
Image export, to a desktop file or to another desktop program via the clipboard
Pocket DermPACS currently has the following limitations, which will be removed in a subsequent release:
Only jpeg images may be used
Data are stored locally, on the handheld. There is no network functionality
