Our most important objective was to create a product that was as easy to use as a paper crossword. We spent many hours doing crosswords and observing other people of all ages, genders and cultures doing crosswords, building up a body of knowledge which then allowed us to create a product that is simple to learn and simple to use. Crossword Evolution works with mouse, keyboard or stylus. Any clue can be examined for any word direct from the grid or by browsing through the clues. Letters already entered for other clues can be skipped. More than one crossword can be done at the same time and it is simple to see how far you have got in each crossword. Too many pieces of software win at providing great functionality and then lose at making it available to the user. A novice can pick up a PDA and be enjoying Crossword Evolution in less than five minutes. To cover all bases, Crossword Evolution also includes a comprehensive and illustrated help document that can be accessed from within the product, and if that still isn''t enough, then the Crossword Evolution website also provides more documentation and easy access to the support team. Crossword Evolution is able to support many variants, as follows:
TYPE - Crossword Evolution currently supports the three most common types of crosswords, namely Orthodox (sometimes called concise or quick), American (which refers to a type and not the language), and the legendary Cryptic. When you purchase a book, make sure you pick the type that is right for you, or be adventurous and try something new.
LANGUAGE - Crossword Evolution can support many different languages but currently only implements support for UK English and US English. We are keen to hear from customers and constructors who may want to work with us to exploit opportunities for other languages.
AUDIENCE - Audience refers to the target culture used by a constructor. For example, we have a constructor who writes crosswords for the Australian market. The clues are full of references to Australian film, geography, sport and current affairs. Other constructors write for a global audience. By providing an audience description for individual books, a player can ensure that what they get is what they expect.
DIFFICULTY - Crosswords are a puzzle and, as with any puzzle, there are levels of difficulty. Particularly for American and Cryptic types of crosswords, a single bad experience with a difficult crossword can put a player off for life, which is a shame as these types of crosswords are extremely rewarding to master. To manage this potential problem, we mark each book with a five star difficulty rating to help you make the correct choice.
