Hanging mistletoe over a doorway during the holiday season is a tradition around the world. We are all familiar with at least a portion of the mysterious story of this plant: namely, that a lot of kissing under it has been going on for ages. Along with the laurel and the Christmas tree, this ornament is an evergreen displayed during the Christmas season and symbolic of the eventual rebirth of vegetation that will occur in spring. But perhaps more than any other of the evergreens, it is a plant of which we are conscious only during the holidays. It is a plant which often grows on other trees and shrubs. In ancient times the Druids believed that it would bring good luck and health. Although it has been used to treat some ailments, the berries are in fact poisonous and should not be touched by children.
